The Sister Mary Elephant of trivia hosting

Background.

A couple of months ago, my friend Ed asked if there was any way that I could substitute for him as a trivia host for a few games this summer. I’ve played trivia for many years, but I hadn’t gone over to the hosting side – this would be an entirely new experience.

No worries. I stepped up to the plate, and hosted some of his games at the Warbler Pub in Delmar while he had other commitments.

Next thing I knew … I received word that other trivia hosts in the area might need a wee bit of coverage on certain nights.

So, yeah. Here we go. I’ve become the substitute host that can come in in an emergency or in a pinch. In effect .. I’ve embodied the protagonist of the old Cheech and Chong novelty track, “Sister Mary Elephant.”

So what does this eventually mean?

It means that I’m returning tonight for another trivia hosting job at the Warbler, 7:00 first question.

Then it gets fun.

On Tuesday, September 2nd, I’m asking the questions at Katie O’Byrnes in Schenectady, with the first questions at 7:30. One day later, I’m at Local 217 in Albany, with first questions at 7:00. And on Tuesday, September 9, I’m covering at McGeary’s Pub in downtown Albany.

Now does this mean I could possibly block out one night a week for my own trivia hosting duties?

Not yet. I’m not looking for a full-time trivia hosting gig. I’m more than happy to help out when needed or when necessary. A couple of nights a month is more my speed. For now.

Besides, what if there’s some celestial event or an Albany Patroons playoff game or some other event that occurs on that same night, and then I need a substitute host?

Who am I going to call in that instance?

Sergeant Stadanko?
